Welcome to Moose Meadows (Cabin #1) at West Ridge Elementary School. My name is Denise Harford and I am honored to be your student's fifth grade teacher. Moose Meadows is a place where learners create a community of respect and tolerance for others. Our community strives to exemplify the character traits of hard work, perseverance, and responsibility.
STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY/RESPONSIBILITY
Students are expected to come to class prepared with paper, pencils, student planner, and textbook each day.
The fifth grade curriculum is challenging. Fifth graders will be expected to do their very best by giving 100% effort in all that they do. Students will be given a great deal of responsibility this year. When students are pushed to excel, they are prepared to succeed. High expectations and a strong support system help them to reach goals and build self-esteem.
STUDENT PLANNERS
All fifth grade students will use Student Planners daily. Planners promote organization skills and are convenient for parents, students and teachers to communicate with one another. Students must have their planners checked and signed by a parent/guardian DAILY. Planners will be provided by our school, and cost $5 if need to be replaced. The planner contains the student handbook. The student handbook contains a school calendar, building procedures, and rules and regulations.
FIFTH GRADE CURRICULUM
Reading – Theme based literature, exploring various genres (Houghton Mifflin reading program). Assignments will be based on the stories read in class.
Writing- 6 Traits Writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Conventions, Presentation), narrative, persuasive business letter, biography, poetry, and descriptive.
Math- In fifth grade, we emphasize the mathematical process and strategies, develop reasoning skills and problem solving. Topics that we will study include: multiplying and dividing 2 – 3 digit numbers by 2 – 4 digit numbers; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions, decimals and percents; geometry and measurement; and probability. Students at the fifth grade level are expected to know their math multiplication and division facts. Some class time will be spent on drill and practice, but students should brush up on them at home. This can easily be done with flash cards. Knowing their facts will make learning new concepts much easier.
